Roads to Take
  • Going to the Sun Highway [ Glacier NP, Montana ] : Every year there is talk about closing this road to private vehicles and only allowing tour buses. It's a road meant to be ridden!
  • Bear Tooth/Chief Joseph Highways [ Red Lodge, MT to Cody, WY ] : Great ride from either direction. From Cody, over Dead Indian Pass on Chief Joseph Highway into Sunlight Basin (be sure to stop at the bridge in the bottom of Sunlight Basin), then over Bear Tooth Pass into Red Lodge. Plan on spending 3-5 hours on the 120 mile ride. Recommend departing late morning to avoid afternoon rainshowers.
  • Route 66 [ Southern US ] : Chicago to LA. Parts of Route 66 still exist, other parts new roads have been placed over the old road and in some cases abandoned altogether. Route 66 originally followed the stage routes which were put down along available water sources. So plan on a wandering route. There is lots of history, so look at the part you plan on riding then add 30-50% more to the time you have planned so you can take in the sights.

  • Places to Stay
  • Burgess Junction [ Wyoming ] : Located in Wyoming's best kept secret, the Big Horn Mountains, the Bear Lodge Resort offers a hotel, camping, camper hook-ups, swimming pool, hot tubs, and a good restraunt. Take some time to go fly fishing in the Tongue River or drive up the canyon in the evening to watch the moose feeding. Food in the bar isn't bad either.

  • Places to Eat
  • Little Bear Steak House [ Cheyenne, WY ] : Located on the frontage road to the west of I-25 about 5 miles north of Cheyenne. Excellent steaks, but you haven't lived until you try the deep fried lobster!
  • Purple Cow Pancake House [ Hardin, MT ] : Featured in Reader's Digest. Great menu!
  • Joseph's [ Santa Rosa, NM ] : Located on I-40, Joseph's is an authentic Mexican cafe that has been present since the days that Route 66 was the main highway between Chicago and LA. It is mentioned in many books describing Route 66. So step back in time and enjoy a fine Mexican meal.
  • The Hotel Irma [ Wyoming, Cody ] : Built by Buffalo Bill Cody and named after his daughter, has a great breakfast buffet.
